inOld house framing surprise last Tuesday really humbled me
Old school builders had a whole different mindset about strength and permanence, they built things to outlast themselves instead of just hitting code minimums. It's like every time I think we've figured out the modern way, something like that beam shows up and reminds us those guys knew what they were doing with simple materials and pure experience. Kind of makes you wonder how many other smart solutions are hiding behind walls that we'd never think to try today.

inPicked LVP over tile for my Edmonton basement last fall
Wait, you're getting dents from an office chair on LVP? That seems crazy to me. I've got LVP in my basement too and I drag chairs around all the time with no issues. What kind of thickness did you go with, the cheap thin stuff or a decent wear layer? I bet thats the problem right there, you gotta spend a little more on the thicker planks if you want them to hold up.

inWhy does nobody talk about using a glue gun for corner bead nails?
Start by realizing that half the tricks in construction are just repurposing stuff from other trades. Hot glue is basically the universal cheap hack for holding things that don't want to stay put. Same reason guys use duct tape for everything or painters tape for temporary holds. Funny how we all eventually figure out the same shortcuts just different materials.

Yeah but 90 degrees is just the starting point for real geometry.

Old timers been setting picks since before load cells existed, they know their stuff.
