That blade show in Ohio made me rethink my whole carry setup

Went to the custom knife meetup in Columbus back in March and watched a guy slice through a rope with a blade he'd filed down himself. My $180 factory folder couldn't do half of what his $60 build did. He showed me how he heat treats in his garage with a toaster oven, which sounds crazy but the edge held up all day. Since then I've been practicing with a basic file and a cheap steel blank, and honestly my hand sharpening has improved more in 4 months than in the 6 years before that. Anyone else had a similar wake-up call from watching a maker demo live?
