Finally tried a real teach for Root instead of winging it

For years, I'd just hand out the player boards and hope for the best, but last game night I watched the 20 minute 'How to Play' video from the publisher first. The difference was huge, we got through two full games without a single rules argument. Anyone have other games where a proper setup video saved your group?

Saw a friend try to explain Eclipse without the video once. He spent forty minutes on ship customization alone and people just started playing on their phones. A good tutorial video keeps everyone from zoning out before the game even starts.

Last year I tried to explain Terraforming Mars to my family. I got lost in the details of blue card actions and everyone just stared at the board. Now I just set up the starting tiles, give everyone their corporation, and say we're learning by playing. We handle the first generation super slow and answer questions as they come up. It cuts the pre-game talk down to maybe ten minutes.

My first Scythe teach was a solid hour of confused silence.
