Shoutout to the guy at the game store who told me to stop buying expansions

I was at The Dragon's Hoard in Springfield about six months back, looking at the Scythe expansions. This older guy next to me just said, 'You know, you should really beat the base game with every faction before you add more stuff.' I thought he was being a snob, but I listened. I finally finished my last faction match last night, and wow, I get it now. The game feels totally different and way more balanced. Has anyone else had a piece of advice that seemed simple but really changed how you play a game?

But what if you just want to have fun with new stuff right away?

Oh man, that "collecting cardboard" line hits way too close to home. My shelf of shame is basically a museum of unopened expansions.

Tell that guy to come over and sort my entire shelf. I bought the Wingspan expansions before I even knew how to properly tuck a bird card. Now I have a box of fancy eggs and European birds I'm too scared to open. My friend did the same thing with Terraforming Mars, bought Hellas and Elysium before he could even explain how to get steel. We're all just out here collecting cardboard instead of actually playing the games.
