Old timer told me to preheat the patch plate, I laughed, then ate my words
Worked a shutdown at a paper mill outside Greenville last month. This retiree named Carl stopped by to watch us weld a patch on a steam drum. He kept saying heat the plate to 300 before you lay the bead, said it stops the chill crack. I figured he was just bored and giving old school noise, so I ran it cold like usual. Crack showed up about 4 hours later during the hydro test, right along the toe. Had to grind it out, rebevel, and do the whole pass again after we torched the plate with a rosebud. Cost us an extra 6 hours and a set of gaskets. Anyone else ignore a veteran's callout and pay for it on the clock?
