Update: My foreman's old saying about 'cold metal' finally clicked

Heard a new guy in Edmonton last week say a pipe felt 'warm' before he started a weld, and the lead shut the whole job down for an hour. It made me remember my foreman always saying 'metal doesn't lie, your hand does.' I've been way more careful about trusting my temp gun over a quick touch ever since. Anyone else have a shop rule that seemed weird until you saw why it mattered?

My uncle worked in a refinery and said they had a similar rule about checking valve bodies. Your skin can get used to a dangerous temperature and stop sending the right warning signals. That's why those old sayings stick around for a good reason.

Yeah, I always thought those rules were just old superstition. But hearing how your skin can actually stop warning you about heat makes total sense. It explains why they're so strict about using the back of your hand first. I guess some things really are passed down for a solid reason.
