Book club pick sparked a fight over a single word last Tuesday
We met at Susan's place in Portland and someone called the main character 'unlikable' and a 20 minute argument followed about whether that word even matters. Three people threatened to quit the group over it. Has anyone else had a debate get that heated over something so small?

Used to roll my eyes when people got worked up over book club words, figured it was all the same story either way. Then last month we had a two hour blowout over whether a character was "brave" or just "stubborn" and I realized those words change the whole meaning of the book. The brave version made me cheer for her, the stubborn version made me want to shake her, and that's a huge difference in how you experience every scene after. Still think three people quitting is a lot, but I get why that word mattered now.
