Shoutout to the guy in my club who keeps calling unreliable narrators a 'plot hole'
We read Gone Girl for our meetup at the Panera on 5th and this one member, Dave, spent 20 minutes arguing that Amy's whole diary thing was a plot hole because 'she lied and the book never tells you.' I tried to explain that the diary is supposed to be fake, that's the whole point, and he just kept saying a good writer wouldn't trick the reader like that. The thing is, this is the third book in a row where he's done this, he said the same stuff about The Girl on the Train and then again with We Have Always Lived in the Castle. It bugs me because half the club just nods along since he talks the loudest, and then the discussion dies right there. I know I'm not some lit professor, but when the author leaves clues on purpose and you miss them, that's on you, not the book. How do you all handle that one person in a club who kills every talk by calling anything confusing a mistake?
