Last month at the Maplewood library meetup, a woman in her 60s said my all-time pick was 'just a sad man whining about choices he made.' I froze, then realized she had a point about the ending I'd been defending for years. Has anyone else had a stranger dismantle a book you loved so cleanly it changed how you read it?
