Paid $300 for a 'rare' orchid and it died in 2 weeks
I dropped $300 on a so-called rare orchid from a specialty online seller and it arrived with root rot that I didn't catch until day 3, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has had better luck with these high-end plants or if I just got scammed.

Man, that's rough... @benwilliams' buddy probably got the same kind of deal. There's this pattern I see everywhere now, not just with plants but with anything labeled "rare" or "exclusive." People slap a high price on something and folks assume it's quality, but really it's just a gamble on packaging and hype. Orchids especially, they're finicky even when they're healthy, so paying extra for one that shows up already sick just feels like they're banking on people not knowing what to look for. It's like buying a car with a salvage title because the paint is shiny.

Got a buddy who spent $200 on a "black orchid" from some Instagram seller and it was dead within a week. He said the roots were basically mush when it showed up.
