Rant: I always tossed moss off my bonsai, then a guy at the Portland show set me straight
For 6 years I scraped every bit of moss off my trident maple's soil because I thought it was stealing nutrients and keeping the roots too wet. Then last month at the Portland swap meet, an older grower named Hank showed me his trees and every single pot was carpeted in moss, some of it 2 inches thick. He said the moss is his canary, because when it dries out he knows the soil under it is getting dry too, and his trees looked way better than mine. So now I'm deliberately growing moss on my pots and I want to know if anyone else uses it as a moisture gauge or am I just late to this?
