Succulent rescue mission turned into a prickly standoff

Tbh, I had to pick between saving my dying aloe or my roommate's cactus with only one pot left and about 10 minutes before the frost hit last Tuesday. I chose the aloe because it had actual roots, and the cactus looked like it was already giving up. Halfway through the repot, I realized the aloe had a hidden mealybug problem and now my kitchen counter looks like a tiny bug warzone. The cactus ended up surviving outside anyway, just a bit pale, which honestly stung more than the spines. Has anyone else had a plant rescue go sideways when you picked the obvious winner?

That line about the cactus surviving outside anyway really got me because it flips the whole thing. You did not actually lose here, you just lost the story you wanted. The aloe with roots was the safe bet on paper, but mealybugs do not care about paper, and now you are stuck fighting a bug war in your kitchen while the "loser" plant is out there quietly proving you wrong. Here is the part nobody brings up: the cactus probably looked dead because it was going dormant for winter, not dying. A lot of cacti go pale and shrink when it gets cold and they are basically fine. So the real lesson is you were not picking between a healthy plant and a sick one, you were picking between a plant that needed help and a plant that needed to be left alone. Next frost, check if the "giving up" plant is just sleeping before you make the call.
