Succulent rescue mission turned into a prickly standoff

Tbh, I had to pick between saving my dying aloe or my roommate's cactus with only one pot left and about 10 minutes before the frost hit last Tuesday. I chose the aloe because it had actual roots, and the cactus looked like it was already giving up. Halfway through the repot, I realized the aloe had a hidden mealybug problem and now my kitchen counter looks like a tiny bug warzone. The cactus ended up surviving outside anyway, just a bit pale, which honestly stung more than the spines. Has anyone else had a plant rescue go sideways when you picked the obvious winner?
