Watched my neighbor's lawn go from dead dirt to a full clover patch in 8 months
My neighbor Rob down the street stopped mowing his front yard back in April and I figured he just gave up on it. By July it was a mix of clover, dandelions, and something with tiny purple flowers, and the bees were all over it every morning. He told me he killed his whole lawn with cardboard and wood chips the year before, and the clover just moved in on its own. Now I'm staring at my own sad fescue and wondering if I should do the same thing, but I'm worried about what the HOA will say. Has anyone here actually converted a patch of grass to clover and had it stick around through winter?
The weird thing is how many of us got sold this idea that a lawn has to be one single plant, mowed to the same height, forever. Walk around any old field or ditch and it's always a mix, clover and dandelions and whatever else, and it holds up fine through winter without anyone watering or spraying it. Rob basically let nature do what it wanted and it worked better than what he was fighting for before. Your HOA is the real question though, some of them have rules about "noxious weeds" that clover technically falls under. Worth reading your covenants first before you kill anything, because putting grass back is way harder than taking it out.
