Why I think native wildflower gardens beat fancy hybrid roses, and last April's bloom proved it
Everyone in my local garden club keeps pushing hybrid tea roses as the gold standard, but last April I spent a whole weekend planting a 40 square foot native wildflower patch in my backyard in Portland and it brought in more bees and butterflies than my neighbor's prize rose bed ever did. By June that little patch had 11 different species blooming on its own with zero fertilizer and barely any watering, while his roses needed weekly spray and still got black spot. Am I wrong for thinking we should stop chasing perfect blooms and just plant what actually belongs here?
