I finally stopped dunking my trowel in the water bucket every 30 seconds
An old mason named Gus who runs a crew out of Albany pulled me aside on a job about six months ago and said my mortar was getting soupy because I kept wetting the trowel instead of the board. I figured he was just being picky, but he had me wipe the trowel dry on my rag and get the mud off the board edge before each strike. My joints stopped sagging, my buttered ends actually stuck, and I stopped losing bricks off the line on hot afternoons. Anyone else run their trowel dry like that, or do you keep the sponge handy and just watch your water mix closer?
