I was laying a herringbone patio for a week before my apprentice pointed out my spacing was off
I was doing a big patio job in Springfield, using those standard 4x8 pavers. I was so focused on the pattern that I kept eyeballing the gaps, thinking they looked fine. My new guy, Mike, finally spoke up after three days and said, 'Boss, your joints are all over the place, from 1/8 to almost 3/8.' He grabbed a pack of plastic spacers from the truck. I never used them for pavers before, always thought they were for wall blocks. Threw them in and the whole thing just locked together. The speed and the look improved instantly. Anyone else have a simple tool they avoided that ended up being a game changer?

Ever try to cut a long board with just a circular saw and no guide? I fought with that for years, always getting a wobble on the last foot. My buddy finally made me use a simple clamp-on straight edge, the kind you can get anywhere. Changed everything. It's the same idea, you skip the basic helper because you think you're good enough without it, but that little bit of extra help just makes the whole job smooth.

Exactly, it's that stubborn pride thing. We tell ourselves we've done it this way for ten years, so why change? But those little spacers or a simple guide aren't a crutch, they're just smart. They free up your brain to focus on the bigger picture of the job instead of sweating every tiny gap or cut. It's not about not being good enough, it's about working smarter so the result is always consistent.

Man, I feel that. We all get stuck in our ways and miss the simple fix sometimes. Good on Mike for speaking up.
