I stopped buying those $2 seasoning packets after a cooking class at the community center
Went to a free cooking demo at the rec center downtown last month. The instructor showed us how to make taco seasoning from stuff we already had in the cupboard. Paprika, cumin, garlic powder, chili powder - it took maybe 3 minutes to mix up. Those packets are mostly salt and anti-caking agents anyway. Has anyone else found other mixes you can make at home for way less?

Did you try it with smoked paprika instead of regular?

Read this article from Serious Eats that broke down how those packet companies actually use yeast extract to make everything taste "savory" without having to use real spices. It's basically just salt and MSG with a little dusting of paprika for color. Swapped to smoked paprika in my homemade blend and honestly it was a game changer for chili. That little bit of smokiness makes it taste like you've been simmering it all day even when you just threw it together in 10 minutes. My advice is to toast your cumin seeds whole in a dry pan before grinding them, it wakes up the flavor way more than the pre-ground stuff.
