inPSA: I was reading about the Ulfberht swords and the carbon content blew my mind
Ever wonder if they used a special kind of iron ore from the start? That's a big part of it. Some experts say they might have used high-carbon iron from places like Central Asia, which is basically pre-made steel. Then it's about the smith's skill, not just the furnace. Modern smiths can make them, but they have to really limit their tools to get it right, which is super hard.

inMy neighbor swore by safflower seed for keeping squirrels away
My uncle in Ohio swears by safflower too, but only the white kind from a specific feed store. Did you use the plain safflower seeds or was there a specific brand that seemed to work better for you? I'm wondering if the quality or where it's from makes a difference, because my local stuff got totally ignored.

inHot take: I used to think a quick visual check was fine for a level 1 inspection, but seeing a cracked flue tile in a chimney I cleared last month in Boulder changed my mind.
Totally, that visual check is basically useless for finding the real issues. I found a whole nest of bees way down in a flue last summer that I never would have seen from above. Those cameras are a total game changer.
