Blew $140 on a rental car I didn't need for a weekend trip to Asheville
So my girlfriend and I planned a 3 day trip to Asheville back in March and I booked a rental car because I figured we'd want to drive around the mountains. That came out to $140 for the weekend plus like $45 in gas. Turns out the hostel we stayed at was a 10 minute walk from downtown and they had a free shuttle that ran every 20 minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway trailheads. We literally used the car once to go to a grocery store. The rest of the time it sat in a paid lot that cost me another $30. I'm not even mad about Asheville itself, the trip was great, but I basically lit $215 on fire because I assumed I needed a car without checking anything. If you're going somewhere with a walkable downtown and any kind of shuttle service, do the math first. Renting a car for a weekend trip only makes sense if you're actually leaving the city. Has anyone else done the rental car thing out of pure habit and then regretted it?
