Hostel private rooms vs. cheap hotels: which actually saves money long term?

I used to swear by hostels for budget travel, but after a trip to Portland last fall, I started doubting it. I paid $85 a night for a hostel private room, and my friend paid $75 for a motel near the airport with a real door and no shared bathroom. I slept okay, but I had to buy earplugs and lock my stuff up. He just walked in and slept. Now I'm wondering if the extra $10-20 for a basic hotel is worth avoiding the noise and the hassle. For two weeks in a city, the math adds up. Has anyone else flipped on this, or am I missing why hostels still win? What's your cutoff price for a private room or hotel over a dorm bed?

That $10-20 gap is nothing once you factor in buying earplugs and trusting strangers with your gear.
