Paid $80 for a 'local guide' in Rome, could've just followed a free walking tour

Booked a private guide last month through a random site, she was nice but basically read from a script I could find on Wikipedia. Has anyone else had better luck with those free tip-based tours, or am I just bitter about losing money?
