Bought a $45 toaster at a Walmart in Gary last month, and by week 3 the lever wouldn't stay down
So I'm standing in my kitchen at like 6:40 in the morning, trying to make toast before I head out to a job, and the lever just pops right back up. Every single time. I paid $45 for this thing because the box said it had a 2 year warranty and like 4.5 stars from over 800 people. So I go back and read those reviews again, and sure enough, buried under all the 5 star stuff are like 15 people saying the exact same thing happened to them around week 2 or 3. The top reviews were all written within a day or two of delivery, which tells me nobody is going back to update after the thing craps out. I ended up driving back to the store, waiting 25 minutes in the return line, and the guy behind the counter didn't even blink, he said they get that model back all the time. Now I read the 2 and 3 star reviews first, no matter what. Does anyone else sort by lowest rating before they buy anything, or is that just me being paranoid?
A toaster that gives up after three weeks is basically just a bread warmer with trust issues. And of course all the five star reviews got typed out the same day it showed up, nobody runs back to the site three weeks later to say hey this thing still works great. That guy at the counter saying they get that model back all the time is the real review right there, straight from the horses mouth. Sorting by lowest rating first is not paranoia, it is the only way to find out what actually breaks and when. The one stars tell you if it died on day two, the twos and threes tell you if it limped along for a month first, and that is the info you actually need. Plus the bad reviews are usually way funnier, people get creative when they are mad.
