Fixed a jammed Nikon F3 with a $2 rubber stopper after my $14 tool kit failed
A customer brought in an F3 last week with a sticky mirror, so I ordered a $14 magnet tool kit off Amazon that everyone raves about. Spent two hours fiddling with the tiny suction cup and it kept slipping into the mirror box. Out of frustration I grabbed a $2 rubber stopper from the hardware store on Main, trimmed it with an X-acto, and it grabbed the mirror frame on the first try. The whole repair took 10 minutes after that. Has anyone else found cheap hardware store stuff that beats purpose-built camera tools?
I used to be the guy who bought every fancy tool because I figured cheap stuff would just break or scratch something. Your story made me rethink that. A trimmed rubber stopper doing in 10 minutes what a $14 kit couldn't do in two hours says a lot about how much we overpay for the label.
