That collector in Detroit told me to stop using isopropyl on old shutters
He said the alcohol was drying out the lubricant in the mechanism, and after checking three seized-up bodies from my bench I think he was right. Anyone else switch to naphtha for cleaning those old leaf shutters?

Switched to naphtha a couple years back after ruining a Compur shutter with iso. The alcohol stripped out the old lube completely and left it bone dry, but naphtha actually dissolves the gunk without messing up the remaining grease. Ran a batch of Wollensak Rapax shutters through it and they came out smooth, no stiff blades or sticky slow speeds. Just make sure you let everything evaporate fully before relubing or you'll trap solvent behind the new oil.
