DAE rent by the room in a shared Toronto house or take a 90 minute GO Train commute?
Faced this exact call last month: $1,150 for a room in a shared house near Danforth vs $1,750 for a whole basement in Oshawa plus 3 hours of commuting a day. I picked the room and my rent is cheap but I hear my roommate's 6am alarm through the wall every single morning. Side A says save the cash, side B says buy back your time. Which one actually wins long term?
Time is the one thing you can never get back or buy more of later. Three hours a day on a train adds up to about 45 full days a year that you just hand over for a slightly bigger place. The roommate noise is annoying for sure, but a good pair of earplugs costs way less than losing that much of your life.
