Hit $1.2 million in home equity and it still feels like Monopoly money
My wife and I bought our place in Hamilton back in 2011 for $315,000. We just got our latest property assessment and with the renos we did over the years, the bank valued it at $1.5 million. After the mortgage, that leaves us about $1.2 million in equity. I sat down and crunched the numbers last night, and I still can't wrap my head around it because our salaries have never been anything special. We just stayed put, fixed things ourselves, and rode the GTA spillover wave. The funny part is that lot of people in this city are in similar boats, but nobody actually treats that money like it's real. Has anyone else reached a number they never expected, and how do you plan for it without selling or cashing out? We are thinking about a HELOC for a cottage but I'm nervous about leveraging what is essentially paper wealth.
