PSA: The guy at the parts counter in Sudbury said to swap my chain at 0.5 percent wear, not 0.75, and I owe him a coffee
I ride about 4,000 km a season on my old V-Strom and I used to stretch every chain until it was flopping around like wet spaghetti, then wonder why my rear sprocket looked like shark teeth by August. Last spring I was buying a new chain at the counter in Sudbury and the older guy behind it said flat out, "Change it at point five, not point seven five, and your sprockets will last twice as long." I figured he was just trying to sell me more chains. Well, I started checking with a cheap gauge every 500 km, and when it hit 0.5 last week I swapped it out in the garage in under an hour. The old chain still looked fine but the new one made the whole drivetrain feel tight and quiet again, and my sprockets at 12,000 km still have clean teeth with no hooking. Any of you run a chain past the 0.5 mark and regret it, or is that number too cautious for a touring bike?
