Tried a paper map over my phone GPS for a 3 day ride and I'm not going back
Last summer I did the Kananaskis loop with two buddies and my phone died at the worst spot, middle of nowhere with no signal, so I was stuck asking a guy at a gas station near Turner Valley for directions. Before our next trip I grabbed a $12 waterproof map case and printed route maps off the computer, taped them in and clipped it to the tank bag. I figured the phone would still do the real work but the paper ended up being faster, no pinch zoom with gloves on, no battery worry, and I could see the next 40 km of turns at a glance. The phone kept rerouting me every time I missed a side road and the map just showed me where I actually was. Costs nothing to run and I never had to think about charging it overnight at the motel. My phone still lives in my pocket for photos and emergencies, but it's not running the show anymore. Anyone else run paper for longer trips or am I just old school now?
