Bought a hoist off a buddy's cousin and the chain sag is driving me nuts

So my coworker's cousin in Phoenix sold me a used 2-ton chain hoist last month for $150 and said it was 'perfect for your garage setup.' I got it bolted to the beam and tried lifting my Mustang shell, but the chain bunches up and skips every time I crank it, making the load tilt sideways. Anyone else deal with a sagging chain on a budget hoist, or do I just need to pony up for a new one at Harbor Freight?

That chain sag is a classic sign the load chain is stretched or the brake pawl is worn, not just a cheap hoist issue. I'd check the chain links for wear marks first before dropping cash on a new one. If it's got hot spots or stretched links, yeah, just grab a new hoist and skip the headache.
