Hot take: a recruiter told me my resume looked 'too honest' and I can't let it go
I was at a job fair in Columbus back in March, waiting in line for this staffing agency booth, and the recruiter flipped through my resume in about ten seconds and says, "you list your gaps, that's too honest for this market." I've got a 14-month gap from when I got laid off in 2022 and I've always just put "career break" with a short line about caring for a sick parent. She wanted me to stretch the dates to cover it and drop the break note entirely. I stood there holding my folder and felt like the ground moved. Like, I did the work of being honest on purpose, and now I'm being told it's a flaw. I get that hiring is a game with weird rules, but I keep wondering where the line is between marketing yourself and lying. If I stretch my dates by a few weeks per job, that's just fudging, but a 14-month gap is a different size of lie. Has anyone actually had a recruiter push them to do this, and did you do it or walk away?
