Caught my own bad habit on stair stringers, and the fix is 2 inches
Did a set of basement stairs in Cedar Rapids last week and finally measured my stringer layout against the floor cut instead of just eyeballing it like I usually do. Turns out I was ripping the bottom of my stringers about 2 inches short on almost every set, then shimming the whole thing up and calling it close enough. The stair rise ended up off by a quarter inch on the bottom step, which is small on paper but you feel it walking up. I know because I went back to two sets I built earlier this spring and checked them, and both had the same gap under the bottom riser. Fixed it by cutting the stringer with the tread thickness already figured in, no shims, and the third set landed dead flat on the slab. Anyone else build that trim allowance into the stringer cut from the start, or am I late to this one?
