My wife asked me why I always cut my own trim instead of buying it pre-cut, and I realized I've been doing it the hard way for 15 years because that's how I was taught.

She said, 'You spend 3 hours on a Saturday making a pile of sawdust for $40 worth of pine, but you could have just grabbed it from the rack and been done in 20 minutes,' and now I'm questioning every 'right way' I know.

Honestly, that sounds like 3 hours well spent. There's a real satisfaction in making something yourself, even if it's just trim. Buying it pre-cut gets the job done, but you lose the whole craft of it. Your way means it fits exactly how you want, not just close enough. Sometimes the hard way is the right way because it's yours.

My buddy Dave spent an entire Saturday cutting and fitting a single piece of crown molding for his weird angled ceiling. He was cussing up a storm by the end, but when he finally got it? The look on his face was pure gold. He just kept staring at that corner. Buying a pre-made piece would have left a gap, and he'd have to look at that imperfection every day. Now he gets to see a perfect fit he made himself. That's worth more than saving a couple hours, you know?
