Walked through a half built subdivision in Boise and saw every framer doing the same thing wrong
Was killing time in Meridian last weekend waiting on a lumber delivery and walked through one of those new builds. Noticed all four houses on the street had their rim joists nailed flush with no joist hangers, just end nails into the band. Talked to one of the guys and he said the inspector in that county 'doesn't climb under there anyway.' Curious if anyone else out there is seeing inspectors wave this stuff through, because it sure wasn't like that when I was framing in Reno.
Whoa, hold on, no joist hangers at all? That is wild to me because rim joists carry a load and end nailing into the band is just asking for trouble down the road. And the part that really gets me is the guy saying the inspector doesn't even crawl under there, like that is just accepted now. I get that inspectors are busy and can't see everything, but skipping the crawl space on a framing inspection is a big deal. If that house ever has a floor sag or a squeak problem, nobody is going to remember the guy who nailed it flush. That whole street is a callback waiting to happen.
