Felt pads on stairs are a scam, here's my compromise from a condo job in Austin

Last month I did a 3 story townhome in Austin and the homeowner insisted on those clear felt pads under every stair rod, which slid around and bunched up before I even finished the second flight. I told her they only work for a week tops and she paid me $120 extra to glue them down, but they still shifted by the time I packed up my power stretcher. Do you guys just refuse these things or do you have a trick to keep them locked in place?

I used to think felt pads were the easy answer too, but after a job where the homeowner watched me re-stick them three times on one landing, I gave up. Now I just use a thin bead of construction adhesive on the rod itself, no pads, and it holds for years without shifting. The felt is a bandaid, and it's not even a good one.
