Guy at a supply house in Toledo showed me a stair trick that saved my knees on a 14 step run
I used to fight every stair job, tacking and stretching each step by hand, and my back would be wrecked by lunch. About 6 months ago an old installer watched me struggle on a 14 step run in a house outside Toledo and told me to cut one long strip and run it down the whole staircase instead of doing each tread alone. It took me two tries to get the cuts right at the nosings, but once I did the whole thing went down in under an hour with way less waste. Now I measure the full drop first and add 4 inches at the top for trimming. Any of you still doing stairs one tread at a time, or did someone else show you the strip method too?
My buddy Dave tried the one strip trick on a 12 stepper in Perrysburg last spring and cussed the whole first attempt because the nosing cuts kept slipping on him. Once he slowed down and marked each nose with a pencil line instead of eyeballing it, the second go came out clean and he swears he'll never tack step by step again. The trick really does work but only if you take the time on the layout first.
