Spent 2 hours last Tuesday stretching a hallway in Rochester that kept wrinkling, and it was the tack strip the whole time
Pulled up my own work from 3 months back and found the strip was cheap junk that crumbled when I stapled it, so I switched to the good stuff at $8 a box and have not had a single wrinkle since, anyone else got a brand they swear by or is it all the same junk now?
That bit about the strip crumbling when you stapled it really hits home. I had the same thing happen on a job about a year back where the tack strip was so dry it just fell apart in my hand, and I ended up redoing the whole room because the carpet kept popping loose at the wall. What got me was that the box looked fine on the outside, same size, same label style, nothing to warn you. Turns out it had been sitting in a hot warehouse somewhere and the wood just baked dry. Now I squeeze a scrap piece before I buy anything, and if it snaps instead of bends, it goes right back on the shelf.
