Update: I finally quit power stretching after a rough Tuesday in Columbus
I used to swear by power stretching every single carpet before tacking it down, mostly because the guy who showed me the ropes back in 2011 wouldn't do it any other way. Last Tuesday I was on a 40 yard basement job in Columbus and the stretcher kept kicking loose on the cheap pad, so I was chasing wrinkles for two extra hours and burned through my whole afternoon. My back was shot, my knee was throbbing from kneeling on concrete, and the homeowner kept poking her head in asking when I'd be done. Out of frustration I switched to a knee kicker and just worked the carpet in smaller sections with a lot more patience. It took me about 90 minutes longer than usual but the seams laid flat and I didn't have one callback on that job. I have done three installs since then the same slow way and honestly the finish looks tighter than most of my power stretched stuff. Has anyone else ditched the stretcher on tricky basement jobs, or am I just getting lazy in my old age?
