Realized I was overcomplicating rice after 2 years of mushy results

I used to rinse and soak my rice for 20 minutes every time, but last week my roommate just dumped dry rice into boiling water and it came out perfect. Now I feel silly for all that extra effort and wasted water. Anyone else have a cooking habit they stuck with way too long?

Saw a chef on YouTube say the same thing - just boil, cover, and forget it. Rinsing is a scam for most rice.
