Warning: the guy at the food bank in Dayton told me to stop buying canned beans and I fought him for 20 minutes
I volunteer sorting donations every Tuesday at the pantry on Fifth Street, and a retired cook named Ray kept telling me canned beans are a waste of money for anyone trying to eat on $30 a week. I told him he was wrong because a can costs 89 cents and dry beans take forever, but he handed me a 2 pound bag for $1.79 and said to soak them Saturday night. That week I made eight meals out of that bag plus a $1 onion and some rice, which came to about 42 cents a bowl. So now I admit he was right, dry beans win on cost and taste, but I still keep two cans in the cupboard for nights when I get home at 9 and have nothing in me. Does anyone here actually soak theirs, or do you just do the quick boil thing and call it good?
