I started cutting my own chicken breasts at home and the price gap finally hit me at the register
Three weeks ago I was standing in line at the Kroger on Manning Ave watching the guy in front of me pay $11.49 for a pack of six pre-cut chicken cutlets. I had bought two whole family packs of breasts on sale for $1.99 a pound the same trip, and my total came to $8.73 for way more meat than his. That night I finally sat down and did the math instead of just feeling like I was saving money. Cutting them myself takes me about 6 minutes with a decent knife, and I end up with cutlets, strips and tenders from one pack. The weird part is I used to buy the presliced stuff because I thought it saved time, but it really just saves a few minutes I wasn't even using. I've done this four weeks straight now and my chicken spending dropped from about $45 to $22 a week for my family of three. Curious if anyone here buys whole chickens instead and breaks them down, or is that too much hassle for the extra savings.
