Rant: dropped $18 on a 25 lb bag of rice at Costco and it turned my grocery bill upside down
Two months ago I grabbed that big yellow bag thinking I was being smart, and now I'm eating rice four nights a week because I feel guilty about the 25 lbs sitting in my pantry. Turns out the real cost wasn't the bag, it was the $40 of sauces, frozen veg, and eggs I keep buying to make it not boring. I did the math and I'm at like 90 cents a plate, so the bag paid for itself in about 8 meals, but the storage situation in my small kitchen is a whole other problem. Has anyone figured out a way to keep a big bag of rice from going stale without buying another plastic tub?
Man, this is just how bulk buying goes in general and nobody warns you. You save on the thing itself but then you end up spending more on everything around it, same as when people buy a chest freezer and then fill it with $300 of meat they never eat. The whole thing is a trap that feels smart in the moment. For the rice going stale, I just leave mine in the bag and clip it with a chip clip, then shove the whole thing in the freezer if you have the room, that kills any bugs and keeps it fresh way longer. My kitchen is tiny too so I get the pain, sometimes the "deal" costs you more than money, it costs you space and mental energy.
