Found out most chimney fires start from creosote at just 1/8 inch, and I've been telling folks a quarter inch was fine
I was reading through an old CSIA pamphlet at the shop on Tuesday and it said 1/8 of an inch of creosote buildup is already thick enough to catch, not the 1/4 inch number I've been repeating to homeowners for who knows how long. Now I'm sitting here wondering how many of my regulars I sent off with bad info and whether I need to go back through my notes from this season. Any of you ever catch yourself passing along a number that turned out to be flat wrong?
Did you ever hear the one about the 2 inch rule for clearance to combustibles? I had an old timer tell me that was the number for years and come to find out it depends on the pipe and the setup. Made me realize a lot of these numbers get passed down by word of mouth and nobody ever goes back to check the source.
