The six inch rule I keep seeing ignored on new installs
Been doing this trade for 12 winters now, mostly in the Denver area, and I swear every other house I walk into lately has a stove pipe that doesn't stick up far enough above the roof. I measured one last Tuesday, it was only 8 inches above the shingles when the manual called for 24. The homeowner said the installer told them it was fine because the roof pitch was steep. That's not how draft works, wind shear off that slope just dumps backpressure right into the flue and you get smoke rolling into the living room every time the wind gust hits. I know checking clearances takes an extra 15 minutes on a ladder, but I've had to redo three flues this season that were all installed wrong by guys who should know better. How are we supposed to keep the trade credible when basic code numbers get skipped? Has anyone else seen this getting worse in their area or is it just the newer crews out here?

Guess my tape measure must be jealous cause it never gets to see that much pipe either.
