PSA: Tried cheap rasps from the hardware store to save 40 bucks

I bought a set of farrier rasps from a big box store last month thinking they'd do the same job. Wasted about 3 hours on two horses before they dulled out completely. Ended up having to rebuy proper ones from the supply shop for $65 after shipping. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way with budget tools?

Accidentally fixed thinning hair with a kitchen ingredient my grandma swore by

I had a client in Phoenix last month who was losing hair around her temples and nothing was helping. Out of desperation I tried a rinse made from rosemary and boiled water that my grandma used to make. After 3 weeks of using it between shampooing her new growth was visibly thicker. Has anyone else tried kitchen herbs or am I just lucky with this one case?

My kitchen floor leveling took 6 weeks instead of 2 days

Everyone talks about self-leveling compound like it's magic. I tried patching a 4x4 foot low spot in my kitchen and ended up doing 7 pours over a month and a half because each batch cracked or didn't flow right. Has anyone else had self-leveler just refuse to level?

That time the spine cracked because I forgot to account for humidity

I was working on a batch of journals in my garage back in August, 90 degree day with the humidity through the roof. Didn't think twice about it. Glued up the spines, set them in the press overnight. Next morning every single one of them had a crack right down the middle. Turns out the moisture in the air messed with the drying time. Had to tear all six apart and start over. Who else has had a weather related disaster in their bindery?

Found an old barber's journal at an estate sale in Boise that changed my clipper game

I was digging through a box of junk at an estate sale last month and found a leather notebook from a barber who worked in Boise in the 1950s. His notes said to always set the clipper blade tension so the blade just barely hums when you hold it up to your ear, not cranked tight like most of us do. I tried it on my Wahl Seniors and the cut was smoother and the motor ran cooler. Has anyone else tried a looser tension like that?

Why are we still fighting over whether rent control actually helps renters?

I had a landlord in Vancouver tell me last year that rent control was the reason he stopped fixing leaky pipes, because he couldn't raise rents enough to cover repairs. But then a tenant advocate showed me a study from Toronto that said it kept 300 families housed during the pandemic. So who's right here, or is it just different for every building?

Debate: Do we rely too much on factory wiring diagrams or should grease pencil marks take priority?

Talking to a senior mechanic at a layover in Tulsa last Tuesday, he said he strips every wire himself and never trusts the prints because production line errors are too common, but I've always sworn by the diagrams to save time on troubleshooting a 767 galley panel and now I'm second-guessing my whole process has anyone else run into that call where the schematic contradicted the actual harness?

Picked up a pack of 4 from the Family Dollar on Main Street last month, and all three I tried started strobing like a broken disco ball by the third night, so has anyone actually found a cheap bulb that doesn't act possessed?

My accountant told me I was dumb for keeping money in a checking account

Honestly, I used to just let my paycheck sit in my regular checking account all month and then pay bills whenever. My accountant in Denver finally pulled me aside last spring and said I was literally losing like $200 a year in interest. He showed me how to set up automatic transfers to a high-yield savings account on the first of each month. I only keep enough in checking to cover my rent and utilities for that billing cycle. Now I move the rest to a separate account that actually earns 4.5% APY and I only touch it if I need something big. The total amount I earn from interest in a year covers my Netflix and Spotify subscriptions now. Has anyone else had a professional just straight up call them out on a dumb money habit?

PSA: Wired vs wireless sensors in old brick buildings - what's your take?

Last month I did a install in a 1920s brick building downtown and the wireless signal kept dropping through the walls, but going wired meant drilling through 18 inches of solid brick. 3 years ago I would have sworn by wireless for speed, but now I'm second-guessing - do you guys still bother with wired in older structures or just boost the wireless and hope for the best?
