I used to rinse my recycling for 15 years before a waste worker set me straight
Was at a community clean-up in Portland last month and a guy from the local sorting facility saw me scrubbing a peanut butter jar under hot water for like 3 minutes. He laughed and said all that water and energy waste is worse than leaving a little residue. Turns out they have machines that wash stuff anyway. Been wasting gallons of water and my own time for nothing. Anyone else get told some basic recycling habit they thought was right is actually backwards?

Wait till you find out most of that stuff still ends up in a landfill anyway. Half my city's recycling gets burned for energy, so rinsing a yogurt cup is like giving a shower to a corpse.

Heard a buddy spent a whole afternoon rinsing jars then found out his town just dumps them in the same truck as trash.
