My fridge died and the repair guy quoted $450, so I built a root cellar instead
Last month my 12 year old fridge in Portland gave up, and the compressor replacement cost more than a new one. I dug a 4 foot hole in my yard and lined it with cheap shelving, now my veggies and canned goods stay at 55 degrees without any power. Has anyone else gone low-tech for food storage during outages?

A month of digging in Portland dirt and you're calling this an upgrade? That 55 degrees is fine until it rains for two weeks straight and everything turns to mush. Also, 4 feet down in the Pacific Northwest means you're basically building a swimming pool when the ground gets saturated. The repair guy would've been done in an afternoon and you'd have your fridge back, but now you've got a hole in the yard and a whole new set of things to worry about.
