My heat pump install broke my habits, in a good way

I swapped my gas furnace for a heat pump back in March, here in Columbus. The first electric bill made me wince, so I started watching the thermostat like a hawk. Turns out, letting it drift down to 64 at night and using the schedule feature cut my usage by about 30 percent compared to leaving it steady. Now I check the outdoor temp before adjusting anything, because the backup strips kick in below freezing and eat everything. Anyone else notice their old habits clash with how a heat pump actually wants to run?
