My smart thermostat fought me for 3 weeks over a 2 dollar sensor

I swapped out my old programmable thermostat for a smart one to cut heating costs, but it kept running the furnace when nobody was home. Turns out the remote sensor I stuck in the hallway was picking up heat from the laundry vent, so it thought the whole house was colder than it was. It took me 21 days and a bunch of YouTube videos to realize the sensor needed to be in a room I actually use, like the living room. Moved it there last Tuesday and my energy use dropped by 18% on the app the very next day. Has anyone else had a smart home gadget that just worked against you until you found the dumbest possible fix?
