Thought carbon offsets were a scam, then I tracked 12 trees I paid for in Chiapas
I used to roll my eyes at offset programs. Felt like paying someone to forgive you. Last June I put $180 into a reforestation project in Chiapas, Mexico, mostly to shut a friend up. They sent GPS points for 12 trees and I actually pulled up the satellite images each month. By month 8, I could see the canopy filling in. The real shock was the report showing 94% survival rate after the first dry season. That is better than some backyard projects I have seen. Now I want to know if anyone has tracked a mangrove offset, since those supposedly store way more carbon per acre.
The "94% survival rate after the first dry season" is the part that gets me, because that's the thing nobody ever checks. It's like buying a gym membership and never going back to see if the place is still open. Most stuff we pay for online, we just trust it and move on, so actually pulling up the satellite pics each month is the whole ballgame.
