A retired toolmaker in Dayton told me he never checks his backlash until the part is scrap, and I don't know if that's crazy or genius
Last month I was picking up some end mills at a supplier outside Dayton and got talking to a retired toolmaker who ran manual mills for 30 years. He said he never checks backlash on his screws until a part comes out bad, then he checks it and adjusts. His claim was that learning your machine's slop by feel and sound is faster, and dial indicators just slow you down. I grew up checking backlash before every setup, so this threw me. Is he right that you can run by feel, or is that just old school guys rolling the dice on good parts?
